Leading a growing data product
Context
A large international bank needed to build data engines from scratch —with their ETL (Big Data) processes— to assess the physical and transition risk (climate risk) of companies, across a growing number of areas. I joined right at the start, when it was a small, new initiative.
My role
Product direction and backlog management, acting as the bridge between the client's needs and the engineering team.
Decisions and actions
I define and maintain the technical roadmap, prioritise the backlog in Jira to align the work with the client's deadlines and goals, and look after data governance as the scope expands into new areas.
Result
Deliveries have consistently been on time. The product has kept adding engines and areas, and the team has grown from 3 to more than 10 people alongside that expansion.
Learning
Scaling without missing deadlines depends less on rushing and more on prioritising well and holding the focus between business and engineering.
